Mother Mary - Model of Our Faith

Last night my husband and I attended the final mission night with the passionate Nigerian priest Father Maurice Emelu, where he spoke on "our mother Mary."

After singing and praying, Father began to speak about "Mother Mary, model of our Faith." His love for our lady showed in his manner when he told how "Mary's fiat . . . Mary's YES - changed the world." He posed a very provocative question, asking us if we ever wondered what would have happened if Mary said no . . . then reminding us that of course God can accomplish all things. But still, I found this question to be very thought provoking.
Father went on to say "that YES  is an aspect of the backbone of our Faith. Mary accepted God COMPLETELY.  She had Faith as gratitude, as service, as submission to the will of God."

"When we accept God we accept everything God does" Father emphatically exclaimed." Powerful words which Mother Mary models for us all.

Father reminded us that our Christian Faith is not based upon the minister. He brought out that sometimes we have the temptation of taking the minster as the object of our Faith - building our Faith around that person. Then he asked, "But what happens when he messes up?"  He used the latin phrase "ex opere operato" (by the very fact of the actions being performed. Link: The Paschal mystery Vatican Website).  "The power of what is celebrated is not dependent upon the priest" Father explained. He warned us to be careful of "idolatrous faith" which is not really Faith at all!

"The Christian Faith is based on Jesus." His demeanor had become serious, his words  carried weight.  Father discussed the kind of confidence that comes from having true Faith and he beautifully recited Psalm 23  to illustrate that glorious confidence that comes from the Lord - not the self. "Christian Faith is a life of gratitude," he exclaimed "Mother Mary epitomizes gratitude as evident in the Magnificat!

"Faith makes you sing!" Father Maurice proclaimed, "and even if you can't sing (insert chuckles) Faith puts a song in your heart!" At this point he belted out a BEAUTIFUL song of gratitude to God in his native language which moved me to tears (he translated.)

"Faith should make you joyful . .  . Faith is a catalyst for praise and in mother Mary we saw that. Faith also means service." What was the first thing Mary did after the angel told her she was with child? Father pointed out that she went on a long, difficult journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth in haste to serve! "Faith causes you to do the will of God . . . to serve in the church, in the family and in the community. Father's voice rang out, "Faith makes us get out of our comfort zone and do stuff for somebody!"

And finally, Father Emelu reminded us that we are called to be missionary disciples in service and evangelization. The Gospel is the Good News, and "If it is the good news why do we carry it only inside?" he queried. He brought up the woman at the well and how she RAN back to town to tell "come and see the One who knows everything about me!" Father quoted Pope St. John Paul II and reminded us that "sharing Faith is a duty." He continued "It is your duty to share it by your actions. Your life, your kindness, gentleness . . . everything you do should evangelize and share the Lord with those around you." He referenced St Francis here, "Preach the Gospel and when necessary use words."

"Faith is submission to the will of God and is sometimes very difficult." Mary made a vow to God and although she could have doubted she never did! She submitted totally - as a lowly handmaid and is a true model of Fidelity for us all.

Father Maurice Emelu is the host of The Faith with Father Maruice and Word for a Wounded World television series on EWTN Global Catholic Network. You can follow him on Twitter @Revemelu and like him on facebook Fr. Maurice Emelu.

Here is a sample of Father's passion! Enjoy!

We Suffer . . . And We Smile

My husband and I enjoy traveling around to a variety of parishes for missions which help us progress in our Christian Faith walk. We have been blessed to have been inspired by some wonderful priests and speakers through the years.

Every so often I encounter a mission that's extraordinarily powerful - one where there is no mistaking the movement of the Holy Spirit. Such is my experience thus far at the Cure of Ars Advent mission with the dynamic Nigerian priest Father Maurice Emelu.

Last night Father Emelu acquainted us with himself and with the direction his mission would be taking. He told of growing up in a devoutly Catholic household in Nigeria where his family began each day by praying the rosary together at 6:00 am! His use of humor in describing this elicited chuckles from the crowd.  His passion for the Lord was evident as he began speaking about what it means to have real Faith which comes from the Heart. Father quoted Pope St. John Paul II on the coexistence of Faith and reason and how they do not contradict each other but flow beautifully together. He emphasized the importance of having Faith "HERE" - placing his hands upon his heart - and then pointing his fingers at each side of his head he declared that Faith is not "HERE," no, no it is not. Father passionately continued: YES, we are intelligent . . . we have knowledge and this is important  . . . but Faith is not cerebral. Knowledge without Faith is empty - that which does not come from the heart - is really not Faith at all - and it is not of God! (I'd also like to mention that I loved the way Father quoted Pope Benedict and many of the saints and used them as examples.)

Tonight Father Emelu spoke a lot about Abraham. Father passionately enlightened us regarding Abraham's unquestioning Faithfulness and loyalty to God even to the point of giving up everything he had to carry out God's will! Including the willingness to sacrifice his favored son Isaac. Father used humor in describing Abraham and his wife Sarah's unquestioning YES to God to leave their home and everything they had behind - to step out of security and into the unknown no matter how strange that must have looked! Fr Emelu was able to relate it to OUR world and how strange Faith based living and decisions must look to the worldly.

Father Emelu spoke with zeal about falling in love with God and  illustrated how prayer brings us closer to him, strengthening and deepening our relationship with the Father. He emphatically stressed the necessity of prayer without which there can be no relationship! And Father moved me to tears when he spoke about the cross. Every Christian carries one - if you are far from the cross then you are far from God!

Having a cross - suffering - does not however rob us of our joy! We are not grim, bitter or disheartened because we experience pain in life. We have the joy - the peace - that only Christ can give and it is with us, it sustains us through all the trials that we endure. This was so affirming I had to stop myself from shouting 'AMEN!" The truth resonated to my very core. Father tied it all up by sharing something simple yet so very profound - told to him by his own sister:
"As Christians we suffer and we smile . . . we suffer and we smile."
I will update after tomorrows mission!

On The Duty Of Confessing Our Faith

"So let your light shine before men, that they may see
your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in heaven."
Jesus
(Matthew 5:16)

"The Catechism Explained"
(Spirago-Clarke,Tan Books) states that "God requires of us to make outward profession of our Faith." It continues:
"We are bound in our words and actions to let men know that we are Christians and Catholics. It is by open profession of our faith that we help others (as we see from the above words of our Lord), to know God better and to honor Him more."
"The open profession of our Faith [leads others] and also strengthens us in all that is good, for 'practice makes perfect.' Unhappily many are too often cowards. For fear of being laughed at, or by some disadvantage in worldly affairs or interests, many have not the courage to openly profess Faith, or to defend their religion when it is attacked; they laugh at indecent or profane stories, join in immodest conversation, or join in talk against the church in order to avoid the jests of their companions."

Wisely, "The Catechism Explained" also warns us against hostile debate regarding the Faith:
"We should also try to avoid all 'wrangling' discussions and controversies about religion which generally do harm and embitter others against the Truth."

It is imperative that we remain mindful of our goal - not to "win" an argument - but to lead souls to Christ. Christians, we are always called to "speak the truth in love."

"The Catechism Explained" continues:
"Our Lord has promised eternal life to him who fearlessly makes profession of his/her faith. For He has said 'Every one of your who confess Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father Who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32)."

Finally, as we go forth let us heed the words of Saint Paul to the Ephesians:

"Put on the armor of God, so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil."

Friends - we are on the front lines of the spiritual battle. The souls of our loved ones, friends and neighbors are at stake. We must boldly live our Faith in the public square, in our daily lives . . . in ALL we do! Onward, Christian soldiers.

Open Letter To His Eminence Cardinal Dolan and Synod 2015 Fathers - From One of "The New Minority"

Eminence, this blog is being composed as a response to your statement, "Inclusion of the New Minority." The statement in it's entirety can be seen here: Cardinal Dolan: Inclusion of The New Minority

According to your letter, "The New Minority" are those who are Faithful to Catholic teaching and receive very little support and encouragement from, well, anywhere:

"Can I suggest as well that there is now a new minority in the world and even in the Church?  I am thinking of those who, relying on God’s grace and mercy, strive for virtue and fidelity: Couples who — given the fact that, at least in North America, only half of our people even enter the sacrament of matrimony–  approach the Church for the sacrament;  Couples who, inspired by the Church’s teaching that marriage is forever, have persevered through trials; couples who welcome God’s gifts of many babies; a young man and woman who have chosen not to live together until marriage; a gay man or woman who wants to be chaste; a couple who has decided that the wife would sacrifice a promising professional career to stay at home and raise their children — these wonderful people today often feel themselves a minority, certainly in culture, but even, at times in the Church!  I believe there are many more of them than we think, but, given today’s pressure, they often feel excluded.
"Where do they receive support and encouragement? From TV?   From magazines or newspapers?  From movies?  From Broadway?  From their peers?  Forget it!
They are looking to the Church, and to usfor support and encouragement, a warm sense of inclusion.  We cannot let them down!"

Well said and many thanks your Eminence! I'd like to add that there is something very wrong in a church where the Faithful - those who actually strive to FOLLOW church  teaching - have become a minority. As always the church is and has been missionary, praise God. In Pope Francis we can truly see "Peter, fisher of men."

I humbly beseech your Eminence, and all the Synod Fathers, to remain mindful that Catholic teaching is ever Faithful, ever new. As you well know - and as Pope Benedict reiterated time and time again: Truth is not subjective. He also predicted that the church would become smaller.

Please let your hearts and minds be guided by the Holy Spirit to remain in Objective Truth while adhering to the missionary nature of the church. Of course we do not exclude - but we don't water down Truth to suit the culture. Jesus didn't mince words - nor should any of the Synod Fathers. Please, don't allow the evil one to continue obliterating the Catholic Faithful into becoming/remaining a "minority."  May God continue to give us all the grace to remain Faithful. May Jesus find Faith when He comes again. Prayers.

EWTN’s New Show For Youth

To Premiere on YouTube
‘You’re Amazing With Justin Fatica’
Deals With Real Issues Such as Pornography and Broken Families
Irondale, AL (EWTN) – “You’re Amazing With Justin Fatica” is more than just the title of EWTN’s newest series, which will premiere online Thursday, August 27. (Find out more below!) It’s also more than just a slogan to our host, Author/Speaker/Evangelist Justin Fatica of “Hard as Nails.”
Recently, this young dynamo was at a book signing when a teenager came up to him and said, “I think your message is baloney.” Most people would have been offended. Not Justin.
“I’m an East Coast guy,” he said, “I’m thinking, ‘I like this kid.’ I said, ‘Why do you think that?’”
The teen said, “My dad left me. He’s not amazing. Everybody is not amazing.”
Justin said, “That really must have hurt, but your dad is still amazing.”
The teen got indignant. “You can’t say that. You don’t know what I went through. He left us. I had to take care of my brother.”
Justin looked at the teen and said, “That must have been really hard for you. What your dad DID was not amazing, but your DAD is amazing.”
“You can’t say that,” the teen insisted.
“Did it hurt you when your dad left?”
“Yes, I was a little kid.”
“Did you ever cry about it?”
“Yeah, I cried about it! It hurt!”
“If your dad wasn’t amazing, it wouldn’t have hurt so bad,” Justin said. “Your dad just has to know how amazing he is so he won’t hurt people anymore. When you sin, it hurts others and yourself.”

That’s just a taste of the kind of straight talk that Justin uses to begin cracking open the doors to wounded hearts in need of the healing only Jesus can bring. Find out more on August 27, when EWTN kicks off a series that will take you on a journey to high schools across the United States. In each episode, you will experience Justin as he brings young people – and their parents – to Christ.  You will be there as he speaks with teens about the many issues they face such as pornography, broken families, premarital sex, self-mutilation, and lost loved ones.
EWTN’s newest series will premiere online at 8:30 p.m. ET, Thursday, August 27, a week before its 10 p.m. ET, Thursday, Sept. 3 premiere on EWTN television! However, the online version, which can only be seen at www.youtube.com/ewtn, contains a special bonus!

Catholics: Stand With Father Kevin Cusick For Absolute Truth NOW!

I've been remiss in blogging for, well, a long time due to "life" getting in the way. Thankfully I've still been functional as an EWTN press release site - an honor.

I haven't blogged for lack of material . . . as all Faithful Catholics are aware these are times of trial - of severe satanic attack - the likes of which we haven't seen in our lifetimes.

It was our beloved Saint Pope John Paul II who warned, "Woe to you America if you do not succeed in defending life."

Abortion is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with millions of innocent babies having been murdered to date. A "Faithful" Catholic - meaning one who actually practices what the church and Her Founder Jesus Christ teaches - is pro life. PERIOD. Not only are we pro life, we are called to DEFEND innocent life "from the womb to the tomb."
See Abortion Statistics Here:

WITHIN THE CHURCH

Tragically abortion genocide has even infiltrated "The Catholic Health Association." Father Kevin Cusick is a holy priest/military chaplain I've been following on twitter who has petitioned the USCCB for the removal of CHAUSA Leader: Pro Abortion "Nun" Sister Carol Keehan - or the title "Catholic" - from the Catholic Health Association.

From Father Cusick's Blog:

"Abortion is not healthcare; it is murder. Sister Carol Keehan has openly defied Jesus Christ by her encouraging and enabling behavior at every step of the process to introduce the HHS mandate as part of the “Affordable” Healthcare Plan. Even the title of the plan itself has turned out to be a specious lie as so many people are now bankrupted by the program or turned away from any source of health insurance altogether. Above every other consideration, however, the plan is not about health care as long as it approves or pays for any form of abortifacients."
Father Cusick also prudently reminds us:
"We must support our bishops by prayer and obedience. We must act in tandem with them to spread and nurture the Catholic faith for the salvation of souls. But at the same time we are all of us, bishops and people, alike subject to the faith and morals of the Church of Christ, and must help and correct each other whenever that becomes necessary in order to do the same."
I would humbly add that we pray for Sister Carol. Truly she is on the path of eternal perdition and I fear for her soul.

My request is that you support Father Cusick's petition. WE NEED TO STAND UP IN THESE EVIL TIMES! Disciples . . . we've been quiet for too long and have allowed evils such as abortion to infiltrate Holy Mother Church. So please, join me on the front lines in support of this petition: A Priest For Life: Why I Am Asking Our Bishops To Remove Sr Carol Keehan from Leadership of the CHAUSA or Title "Catholic" from It's Name.

If you are on twitter, kindly follow Father Cusick  show him some Catholic love, share his petition and be blessed by authentic, holy church teaching. God's grace be with you all.

EWTN Opens West Coast Studio
With Dedication And Broadcast Of First Show

 Irondale, AL (EWTN) –
EWTN Global Catholic Network Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw and Bishop Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Orange formally opened EWTN’s first studio facilities on the West Coast in a ceremony this morning on the campus of Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. In addition to the dedication, which included a blessing of the TV studio, control room, and offices, Bishop Vann also joined Warsaw in recording the first-ever show from the new facility.

“Today's dedication and launch of EWTN's West Coast studio marks a significant moment in the history of the Network," Warsaw said. “Our collaboration with the Diocese of Orange will enable EWTN to produce exciting new programming that will bring the people and the stories of faith that make up the Church in Southern California to our global audience.  We are also pleased to develop this studio in advance of the historic renovation of the Christ Cathedral itself. We will be well-positioned and prepared to share news of this closely watched transformation with our viewers.”

The EWTN studio is located in the iconic Tower of Hope on the cathedral campus.  Originally built as part of the former Crystal Cathedral complex by televangelist Reverend Robert Schuller, the property was acquired by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in 2011.

“As we transform the Christ Cathedral campus into a dynamic and inspirational center of Catholic worship and outreach, we are blessed to partner with EWTN to share our community’s energy and faithful witness with the world," said Bishop Vann.  "EWTN’s partnership will profoundly benefit our Church, enabling us to share the love of Christ with millions across the world in multiple languages from the Cathedral campus here in Orange County.”

Also among those present at the dedication of the new studios were EWTN President & Chief Operating Officer Doug Keck, who served as moderator for the first broadcast; EWTN Vice President of Programming & Production Peter Gagnon; and EWTN Vice President of Spanish Programming & Production Enrique Duprat.

EWTN Wins Gabriel Award For
Religious Television Station of the Year

Irondale, AL (EWTN) –
EWTN Global Catholic Network has been honored with a Gabriel Award for Religious Television Station of the Year for the third year in a row! The award, which recognizes the Network’s total programming and community service, is part of a prestigious annual competition sponsored by the Catholic Academy of Communication Professionals.

EWTN Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw expressed his gratitude for the honor. He noted, “A Gabriel Award is especially meaningful to EWTN because the awards are presented for programs that uplift and nourish the human spirit and affirm the dignity of human persons – something EWTN strives to do every day. We thank the Catholic Academy for this special recognition.”
“EWTN is the beacon of Catholic broadcast television,” said one of the judges. “It is a consistent and true voice of the Faith. The tape accompanying this entry showed a broader range of programming than I was aware of from my viewing of the Network. Great work as always.”
According to another judge: “The entry had very high production values throughout. The film used excellent images, top-notch CG [on-screen graphics], and a lot of hard work covering everything from the discoveries of a young Catholic child to contemporary trends in the worldwide church. As a viewer, you knew the piece was promoting a Catholic worldview, but never felt like you were being hit over the head with it. Very well done.”

The Gabriel Awards, which is open to both secular and religious television and radio stations and producers in the U.S. and Canada, will be presented Thursday, June 25 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo Hotel in Buffalo, N.Y.

EWTN President & Chief Operating Officer Doug Keck thanked the judges for their comments, saying. “I am proud that the work of the EWTN team is being recognized for excellence. The Network’s programming is a result of a lot of hard work and prayers on behalf of many individuals, particularly Peter Gagnon, Vice President of Programming and Production; Enrique Duprat, Vice President of Spanish Programming; and John Elson, Director of Program Acquisitions & Co-Productions.”
In addition, the EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network’s “Blessed2Play” received a Certificate of Merit for an episode entitled “Life of Christ.”
Host Ron Meyer was also very grateful for the recognition. He noted that “Blessed 2 Play” highlights the faith witness of athletes and sports professionals each week. “I am grateful to the estimated 200 athletes, coaches, authors and broadcasters who have sacrificed their time to be guests on the show and make Blessed2Play what it is.”

EWTN Documentary
Takes YouBehind the Scenes
of the Christian Genocide in Iraq

Irondale, AL (EWTN) –
As details of genocide of 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus began leaking out of Rwanda in 1994, the secular media and Hollywood jumped on the story and dozens of films were made, including the award-winning “Hotel Rwanda.” But who is making a film documenting the “religious cleansing” of hundreds of thousands of Christians in the Middle East? Who is courageous enough to brave the possibility of being beheaded, burned alive or crucified, to bring the world the voices of those Christians whom Muslim extremists have been hunting off the face of the earth?

Enter intrepid Italian filmmaker Elisabetta Valgiusti, who traveled to Erbil in Kurdistan, site of U.S. bombing against ISIS, in late 2014 to film an EWTN Original Documentary, “Voices of the Persecuted: Nineveh’s Christians in Exile.” See the extraordinary results of this investigative journalist’s work at 10 p.m. ET, Wednesday, April 1. If you want to know more about what is happening with Christians in the Middle East, do not miss this program.

The documentary will be preceded by a special “EWTN Live” with Bishop Yousif Habash of Our Lady of Deliverance Syriac Catholic Diocese in the U.S. and Canada. (Airs 8 p.m. ET, Wednesday, April 1.)

“[Muslim extremists] are not just displacing, but uprooting the existence of Christianity in the Middle East,” said Bishop Habash said. “They want to exterminate Christians, and nobody is saying anything – not the U.N., organizations, universities.”

During the documentary, you will learn about the fate of the quarter million Christians in Nineveh who miraculously escaped the invading ISIS terrorists on the night of August 6, 2014, with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Bishop Habash believes that the slaughter of so many of his countrymen has left no more than 300,000 to 350,000 Christians in the Middle East. Most are living in terrible conditions in Erbil.
The question is: What can be done? Bishop Habash has some answers. To find out more, tune in Wednesday, April 1 at 8 p.m. ET to “EWTN Live” and at 10 p.m. ET for this extraordinary documentary.
