The Heretical Testament of Mary

"A Broaday show based on a novel by Colm Toibin is preparing to open at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York for a limited run of 12 weeks. Previews start on March 26th. The show is a one woman play called "The Testament of Mary" and stars Fiona Shaw and is directed by Deborah Warner. The "Mary" of the title refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this play however, any similarity to the Holy Mother of God stops with her name.

The play is yet another attempt to tear away the beliefs that we as Catholics hold in faith as the truth. Mary is portrayed as an anguished old woman who finds comfort in a pagan temple - and who is never able to forgive herself for fleeing the crucifixion to save her own life. She does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God and if He were, His redemption of the world would not have been worth it. The message of this play is horrific and as Roman Catholics we should not tolerate it. Even the ad for the play is sacrilegious in that it shows a woman (Mary) with a crown of thorns around the back of her neck and over her mouth, implying that Mary was, in some way, prevented from speaking the truth about her life and her son.

It's time to take a stand in honor of the Holy Mother of God and protest to the writer, director, actress and owners of the theatre that we, as Catholics, are radically offended by productions like this one. Also, please take the time to pray for everyone involved with both this book and the play - because their woundedness may be keeping them from the one true woman who loves them with a Mother's love - Mary.
