I've been tossing around the idea for quite some time now. A veil/mantilla is so lovely and reverent, I wish we never stopped wearing them. When I was a little girl sometimes my grandmother used to "bobby pin" a tissue to my head, or a scrap of lace. Even then (circa 1968-69) veils were phasing out.
My feeling is that I would love to bring back this tradition - to express reverence. The mantillas of today are so pretty, they come in all colors and lengths. However, I'm worried that it would be too much of a distraction now - since it is not the norm. The last thing I want to do is to draw attention to myself, which would defeat the purpose of wearing a veil in the first place. Perhaps we could start a movement where we all begin wearing them again. What is your opinion?
Well, that's the rub, isn't it---to NOT draw unwanted attention to oneself. I do see women at Mass occasionally who wear mantillas or even hats. Most of the women in mantillas are Filippina so perhaps it's much more common in that culture.
ReplyDeleteI DO like the idea, though. I remember my mom decrying the passing of the practice of wearing hats to Mass: "They hid a multitude of sins!"
Thank you for tweeting my Ecce Angus Dei photo. I am happy to find your blog, too. Thought I'd share why I wear my Chapel Veil/Mantilla. http://totustuusfamily.blogspot.com/2009/01/chapel-veil-signal.html
ReplyDeleteGod bless your New Year!
I think it's a wonderful idea:)
ReplyDeleteI started wearing my mother's mantilla and two others I had tucked away. My 6 year old daughter wants her own. nervous at first till I found that there were others wearing their's and a group of women looking to order some. My mother taught me to dress up for Mass as a sign of respect. Going back to covering one's one's head is I believe another way to show reverence. Got a mantilla tucked away? Don' be embarrassed to wear it. Think of the girl's not embarrassed to wear mini-skirts and daisy-duke shorts to Mass.
